Also caused by trauma, tumor, arachnoiditis, idiopathic. Clinical: dissociated sensory loss (loss of pain/temperature, preserved vibration/proprioception β cape-like distribution), weakness, areflexia, scoliosis, neurogenic bladder. Diagnosis: MRI spine. Treatment: treat underlying cause (posterior fossa decompression for Chiari I). Syrinx shunting rarely needed. Asymptomatic syrinx may be observed.
